Engineers increasingly need to maintain industrial control systems remotely. A traditional arrangement uses a VPN router at the site. The original article cites a dedicated router costing around RMB 10,000, with a relatively complex setup. Ordinary VPN routers with dynamic DNS can support some maintenance tasks, but do not necessarily support operations such as changing a PLC’s IP address.
With TIA Portal Cloud Connector, the original application note describes another option for Siemens PLCs and SIMOTION. Cloud Connector is installed on an ordinary PC at the site, simplifying the on-site arrangement.
