Electronic gearing and camming give rotary-knife systems a flexible way to synchronise motion with a moving web.

Material-processing machines often need to cut or process material at a set length. Examples include cutting or creasing printed plastic sheet and paper in line with a printed pattern, or cutting and drilling metal and other sheet materials at regular intervals.
Mechanical cams were traditionally used for this work. They are subject to wear, and changing a cam profile is difficult. An electronic cam allows the required motion profile to be changed in the control system.
